Tom Clancy's EndWar
Genre: Real-Time Strategy
By: Ubisoft
Platforms: PC X360 PS3
Release Date: TBA 2007

Tom Clancy's EndWar is about World War III. However, it's not the World War III envisioned in the author's classic 1985 novel Red Storm Rising. Instead, this vision of World War III has been updated to take into account geopolitical tensions and future technology. EndWar will offer up some pretty innovative gameplay as players around the world participate in a huge online virtual war.

Set in the year 2020, EndWar will pit the forces of the US and Europe against a newly reenergized Russia. However, things aren't too peachy between America and her European allies. As designer Michael de Plater, one of the key designers behind the popular Total War games, explained to us, the US and Europe are split over America's militarization of space. By researching antimissile technology, America makes World War III possible by reducing the chances of a nuclear conflict. However, Russia, having rebuilt its military thanks to the fact that it has major supplies of oil in a world that has exhausted most of the traditional supplies, is furious, because it felt that nuclear deterrence was the reason the peace was kept for so long. After America's Freedom Star space station is destroyed on the launchpad by terrorists, everything comes to a head, and war is declared.

Here's where you and everyone else who plays EndWar will come in. When you play the game for the first time you'll select a side to fight for. You'll then be presented with a virtual map of Europe and North America, with front lines defined on it. Let's say that there's a fierce battle for Nebraska. You can choose to help out your side by jumping into a battle there. At the end of the day, the game calculates the overall winner based on the outcome of all the battles in that territory and adjusts the front lines accordingly. This cycle is repeated until one side is wiped out, and the war is reset.

When you jump into a battle it will be unlike any kind of strategy game that you've seen before, according to de Plater. The idea isn't so much that you'll play the game like a traditional real-time strategy game, but rather that you'll play it like a 3D wargame. Ubisoft was inspired by many things, even Madden football games, and the closest comparison that de Plater came up with was Company of Heroes, only much bigger. Here's how it will work: There can be up to 12 players in each battle, with six on each side. The number of units in each battle will be divided by the number of players on a team. So if there are 18 units in the battle and six players on a team, each player controls three units; if there are only three players on the team, each player controls six units; and so on. Players will communicate using real-time voice chat and will use voice commands to order units around, just like a real general.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft didn't have the game on display to show us any of this in action. Instead, the company just showed off the official trailer for the game, which features a hellacious battle for Paris with infantry, tanks, high-tech drones, and more. For every move one side made, the other would counter with its own surprises. Sadly, the trailer itself was prerendered CGI, so we didn't even get a chance to see the game's graphics engine in action. Still, judging from the trailer, everything will be brought into play, including orbital weaponry that fires missiles down to Earth with pinpoint precision.

Tom Clancy's EndWar may very well be the most ambitious strategy game on the horizon, for either the PC or console. Thankfully, it's coming to the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. We will definitely get more on this game as it develops, but keep an eye on EndWar. It's due to ship around the spring of 2008.

Surf's Up
Genre: Surfing
By: Ubisoft
Platforms: PC X360 PS3 Wii PSP NDS PS2 GBA GC
Release Date: May 29, 2007
ESRB Rating: 10+ Crude Humor Language
Official Site: http://www.surfsup.com/
Currently scheduled for release later this month, Surf's Up is an extreme sports game inspired by the upcoming movie of the same name. Set on the waters around the exotic Pen Gu Island, Surf's Up casts you as one of 10 playable penguins (OK, technically only eight of them are penguins--one is a chicken, another is a secret unlockable character) attempting to win the annual Reggie Belafonte Big Z Memorial Surf Off competition. We haven't defeated nine-time champion Tank to claim the trophy for ourselves just yet, but while playing a near-finished version of the game recently we were able to check out a few of ithe game's varied environments and get a feel for its controls.

Only four of Surf's Up's characters will be selectable from the outset: carver Cody Maverick, acrobat Chicken Joe (you guessed it, he's the chicken), and aerial specialists Rory Nubbins and Lani. There are four character attributes to consider when choosing your surfer, including their turning talents, their freestyle flair, their "stoke" trick skills, and their speed boost ability. Your surfer's appearance can be customized using various back, head, arm, and wrist accessories, although many of them need to be unlocked, along with better boards. Said boards will affect your surfer's attributes and can be customized with different colors and patterns before you take to the water.

Before taking part in the competition proper you'll have an opportunity to play through several brief tutorials that do a good job of familiarizing you with all of the game's controls, which, on the PlayStation 3, include the option to steer left and right and brake simply by tilting the Sixaxis controller. We found using the left analog stick to perform those same actions preferable on this occasion, and we also put the right analog stick--which is used to perform "freestyle" flips and spins in the air--to good use. All four of the face buttons are used to perform tricks, designated as basic tricks, advanced tricks, hold tricks, and stoke tricks, respectively. Basic tricks can be performed very quickly; advanced tricks take a little longer but are worth more points; and hold tricks leave the timing up to you by ending only when you release the button. Stoke tricks, which are somewhat reminiscent of the over-the-top "uber-tricks" in EA Big's SSX snowboarding series, take a long time to perform and can be attempted only after you've managed to fill up your energy bar by performing other tricks. Other controls worthy of a quick mention include using shoulder buttons to "float" on top of a wave in the same way that you might grind a rail in a skateboarding game, and to spend some of the aforementioned energy on a speed boost that can be used to get extra airtime or to smash through otherwise impassable obstacles.

Given that Surf's Up is targeted at a relatively young audience it's not surprising that the controls are easy to pick up and that progressing through the game isn't particularly challenging. With that said, the waters around Pen Gu Island are anything but surfer friendly, and while many of your goals are score oriented, others task you with passing through gates, collecting bonus objects, and finding hidden surf idols. Completing these different goals is the only way to access certain bonus content, such as concept art, movie clips, new multiplayer levels, and a "leaf slide" minigame. In what might well be a first for a surfing game, all of Surf's Up's levels look like they'll have plenty of replay value as well, because there are a number of different routes that you can take through them depending on which goals you're trying to accomplish.

Although they're all purportedly set in the waters off a single island, Surf's Up's levels are very varied, with the icebergs of the first level giving way to tropical locales and volcanoes after less than an hour of play. Each environment has its own distinct obstacles, hazards, and spectacular trick opportunities for you to negotiate, and you'll also find that the waves you're riding vary somewhat. For the first few levels you'll be riding a wave that gently rolls from left to right, for example, but later you'll traverse waves that are move from right to left, and you'll have an opportunity to ride inside tubes for an instant energy bonus.

In addition to the single-player tournament mode that we checked out on this occasion, Surf's Up will feature split-screen competitive support for up to four players. Look for more information on that and the rest of Surf's Up's features in our full review later this month.

Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed is a video game being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft, set for release in 2007.[1] The game takes place during the Third Crusade, in the year 1191. The player assumes the role of Altaïr ( Arabic, "The flying eagle"), a member of the Hashshashin sect (the original "assassins"), whose objective is to assassinate the nine historical figures who are propagating the Crusades. As the player finds and kills these targets, their conspiracy is unveiled.[citation needed] The player will be able to travel through three cities, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus.
The environment is completely interactive, from the people to the historically accurate cities. These cities are populated by many people and the way the player controls Altaïr affects how people around him react to his presence. For example, when going through a crowd, if the player lightly moves someone out of the way, it will not have a significant effect. However, if the player throws someone to the ground and kills them, the crowd may unite against him and he will then have to find a way out. Similarly, if the player shoves a person aside, they may shove him back. If he climbs walls, civilians will gather around, attracting unwanted attention from guards.

Features
The player will be able to grab onto and climb almost any aspect of the environment, which means exploration will be possible to a greater degree than in most other games. Ubi boasts that any object that stands out more than two inches will be interactive.
The control scheme in Assassin's Creed will be significantly different from that of the typical game. Rather than explicitly specifying what actions Altaïr will take, the player presses buttons corresponding to his various body parts and the game attempts to figure out what action should be taken. For example, running toward a wall and pressing the 'legs' button will cause Altaïr to jump over a wall, while pressing the 'arms without weapons' button will cause him to vault it.
A major selling point is "social stealth" - the ability to blend in with a crowd, as opposed to simply hiding in shadows.
It also appears that you'll be able to battle many historical figures, including the legendary order of the Knights Templar.

Weaponry
Altaïr carries a number of highly specialized weapons for his role as an assassin - weapons noted from the trailers include a sword (Xbox 360 gameplay demo), a small crossbow, throwing daggers strapped on his chest as well as his concealed mechanical dagger attached to his left arm, which emerges from under his wrist. This is made to retract so that the assassin remains inconspicuous. Altaïr is also missing his left hand ring finger which was severed as part of an initiation ceremony when he received his mechanical dagger. When the blade is extended and the hand is balled into a fist the blade extends through the space left by the removed ring finger.

Other Media
Pocket Books has announced it will novelize Assassin’s Creed. The title of the first book will be “Assassin’s Creed Book One: The Invisible Imam” and is due to be published in October of 2007. The publisher plans to print a trilogy of novels based on Ubisoft’s upcoming game. The first title in the novel series will detail events leading up to the beginning of the game.
According to xbox.com there have been some discussions between five major studios and Ubisoft, concerning making a film adaptation of Assassin's Creed[6]. However the identity of the film companies has not been revealed and neither has Ubisoft's response.
